As a Muslim, you may have heard the story of how a certain angel refused to bow before Prophet Adam (peace be upon him). This story centers on knowledge. According to Suratul Baqarah verses 31 to 34, Almighty Allah taught Prophet Adam about certain things that the angels did not know. He requested that the angels discuss these things he taught Adam but they confessed that they knew nothing about these things. Then he instructed Prophet Adam to tell the angels about these things and he was able to because Allah had given him the knowledge.
For his ability to teach the angels those things, our lord requested that the angels bow before him. The angels did as Allah commanded but one angel refused to bow before Prophet Adam (peace be upon him). This angel was Iblis, the one now known as Shaytan. Shaytan was disobedient and arrogant. For his disobedience and arrogance, he earned the wrath of Allah and was sent away from Al-Jannah.
There are 2 main lessons to learn here. The first is the reverence of knowledge with Allah and the second is the direness of disobeying Allah. Allah raised the status of Adam because he had the knowledge and he lowered the status of Iblis for his disobedience.
As Muslims, we should seek knowledge for these reasons. We should seek knowledge because Allah favors the one who seeks knowledge. We should seek knowledge because when we do, we are less likely to disobey Allah. If Iblis knew of the retribution that would come after disobeying the Almighty Allah, he may have resisted disobeying Allah’s order.
The Learning Resources of Muslims
As Muslims, we are spoilt for choice when it comes to learning resources. We have hadiths from the prophet to learn from. Some of the most common hadith collections include Sahih Bukhari, Sahih Muslim, Hadith An-Nawawi, and many more. There are also many Seerah books and books written by scholars for us to learn from. Then there is the book written by the ultimate author, the Almighty Allah. This book is the Quran.
You will not be far from the truth if you say that you get the ultimate knowledge when you learn Quran. Of course, if the knowledge is coming from the ultimate author, it has to be the ultimate knowledge.
